While Polymorph is taking a more elaborated shape, please allow me to share some ideas regarding database technology.
- Big Data Tools - Hadoop is not the only player in this arena and it's still worth having one of the Big players around, like DB2(yes), Oracle, Teradata, and SQL Server to speed up processing. Other players deserve solid mention, like Greenplum, Vertica, and Cassandra.
- Data Virtualization is a new name for Enterprise Data Federation -something that´s been happening for decades now.
- Edge computing - Although it is nothing new, Edge Solutions bridge the gap between the clouds, IoT and Analytics, and, as the clouds are getting increasing importance it is about time to consider new ways for data distribution.
- Simple Enterprise Data Platform - To quickly set up such an environment consider this:
1. A Solid Data Catalog based on data governance - can be a package or home-made; it must comprise a data directory, data quality tools, and change controls;
2. A Data Hub to ingest most sources of data - there are some market options and it can also be home-made. It will be used to capture and enhance our data sources, by correcting or integrating different sources.
3. An Enterprise Model - Last but not less important there is the Enterprise Model - or some call it ODS - Operational Data Store. The ODS is the only current way to store correct and needed data from our siloed data. Along with the Catalog and the Data Hub, it is possible to create solid data management to support all company demands under low budgets and maximum performance.
So please, stop overcomplicating things and focus on what matters - the business and let us the architects and IT teams do the "dirty job".
